Athens is the capital of Greece. The city also formed the centre of ancient Greece, which was an influential culture and an important empire in its time. Architectural monuments from the 5th century BC characterise the image of the city centre. These include the Acropolis, a city fortress on a temple hill, with ancient buildings such as the Parthenon columned temple.
